Squirrels do not climb a wall to reach a loft. They arrive along something: an overhanging branch, a fence line that runs to a wall, a cable, or a neighbouring roof in a terrace. Eltham has the highest concentration of those conditions on our patch - Oxleas Wood at the northern edge is ancient woodland, and the estate streets were laid out with trees.

The interwar roofline is the other half. Timber soffit, fascia and verge details that have had ninety years of weather, and roof voids big enough to nest in comfortably. Daytime noise - heavy movement in the loft in the middle of the afternoon - is the clearest indication you have a squirrel rather than a rat.

• Heavy movement in daylight. This is the giveaway. Rodent activity in a loft at three in the afternoon is far more likely to be a squirrel than a rat, because squirrels are active in the day and rats are not.
• Damage to loft insulation. Torn up, compressed and gathered into a nesting mass, usually near the eaves.
• Activity along fences, cables and overhanging branches. That is the road in.

A trapping programme runs over a series of visits with traps sited on the runs the animals are using and checked on the required schedule. The entry point is closed once activity has stopped, and never before.
