Signs of a Wasp Nest at Your Property

• Wasps entering and leaving one specific point. The clearest sign there is. Watch for a few minutes: a steady two-way stream into a single opening means a nest behind it.
• A traffic route in a fixed direction. Wasps repeatedly crossing the garden on the same line are commuting, and the line points at the nest.
• Activity at a soffit, a roof edge, an air brick or a gap in brickwork. These are the usual entry points on a house.
• A papery grey structure. Visible in a loft, a shed, a garage, an outbuilding or hanging in a hedge.
• Scratching or rustling behind a wall or ceiling. A nest being built inside a cavity makes a surprising amount of noise.
• Wasps appearing indoors in one room repeatedly. Usually a nest in the roof void or cavity next to it.

Why One Fixed Price

Most wasp jobs are quoted low over the phone and then adjusted on site, because the nest turns out to be higher up, or round the back, or over a conservatory roof. How Wasp Nest Treatment Works

The nest entrance is located and treated directly, which is what deals with the colony rather than just the wasps currently outside it. Returning foragers carry the treatment into the nest as they come back, so activity is expected to continue for a period after the visit and then drop away - a nest that is completely silent within the hour would be the surprise, not the norm.

On the day

• Keep people and pets away from the treated area and from the flight line for the rest of the day.
• Close windows on that side of the property for a few hours.
• Expect continued activity at the entrance for a period afterwards. It is the treatment working.
• Do not block the entrance. A sealed nest sends the colony looking for another way out, and in a cavity wall or roof void that frequently means into the room on the other side.

Nests Are Annual - and What That Means for You

A wasp nest is used for one season. The colony dies off in the autumn and the nest is not reused the following year, which is worth knowing for two practical reasons. First, an old grey papery nest found in a loft in February is a dead nest and is not a reason to book a treatment. Second, a new queen may well start a nest in the same building the following spring, because what attracted her is the structure rather than the previous nest - which is where proofing the roofline earns its money.

When to Deal With It

Early season nests are small and the colony is a fraction of its eventual size. Late summer is when nests are at their largest and wasps are at their most assertive, which is when most people call and when the job is most worth having done properly. If you have found a nest in May, treating it then is easier for everybody than treating the same nest in August.

Bees Are a Different Matter

If what you have is a bee colony rather than a wasp nest, say so and we will tell you honestly. Bees are not treated as a matter of routine, and a honey bee swarm is normally a job for a local beekeeper rather than a pest controller. Sending someone to treat a swarm that could have been collected is not a service worth selling.
