What the Fixed Price Actually Covers

A standard nest, anywhere on the property. Roof, loft, wall cavity, soffit, shed, garage, garden, outbuilding, hedge, compost bin, bank of soil, behind signage, above a doorway. Ground level or three storeys up. Same figure.

And guaranteed - which means that if a standard treated nest is still active afterwards, we deal with it. That is worth checking against any competing quote, because "fixed price" and "guaranteed" are not the same promise and not everybody offers both.

Why So Many Wasp Quotes Change on the Doorstep

This is the practice the fixed price exists to avoid, and it is common enough to be worth naming.

A price is quoted low over the phone, on the assumption of an easy nest. The operative arrives, finds the nest is higher up than described, or round the back, or above a conservatory roof, and the figure goes up. You are now standing in your own garden with an active nest and somebody quoting a different number from the one you agreed, which is a poor position for making a decision.

The reason it can be one figure is straightforward. The treatment itself is much the same job wherever the nest is. What varies is access - and access is exactly what a pest controller is equipped, trained and insured for. Passing that variation to the customer as a surprise is a pricing decision, not a technical necessity.

The Cost of Doing It Yourself

Aerosol nest killers are inexpensive, and the arithmetic still does not work.

A disturbed colony defends itself, and wasps can sting repeatedly. But the serious injuries from DIY wasp treatment are mostly not from the stings at all - they are from falling off a ladder while being stung. That is the actual risk, and it is not proportionate to the saving.

The second cost is a partial treatment. A nest that is sprayed at the entrance from a distance, or half-treated and abandoned, is a colony that is now agitated and still there. If anyone at the property has a known sting allergy, stay away from the nest entirely and tell us at the booking.

One Nest or Two

The published figure covers a standard nest. If you have more than one active nest, tell us at the booking and we will confirm the position before the visit rather than discovering it on the doorstep - which is the same principle working in the other direction.

Timing Changes the Job, Not the Price

The price is the same in May and in August, but the job is not, and it is worth knowing which one you are booking.

Early-season nests are small and the colony is a fraction of its eventual size. Late summer is when nests are at their largest and wasps are at their most assertive, which is when most people call. If you have found a nest in May, dealing with it then is easier for everybody than dealing with the same nest in August.

What You Are Not Paying For

An old nest

A wasp nest is used for a single season. The colony dies off in autumn and the nest is not reoccupied the following year. A grey papery nest found in a loft in February with no activity around it is a dead nest, and it does not need treating. Removing it is optional and cosmetic.

A new queen may well start a nest in the same building the following spring, because what attracted her is the structure rather than the previous nest - which is a proofing question rather than a reason to treat an empty nest.

Bees

If what you have is a bee colony rather than a wasp nest, say so and we will tell you honestly. Bees are not treated as a matter of routine, and a honey bee swarm is normally a job for a local beekeeper rather than a pest controller. Sending somebody to treat a swarm that could have been collected is not a service worth selling.

Landlords, Agents and Businesses

The fixed price is most useful where the person who noticed the nest is not the person who can authorise dealing with it. A nest in shared roofline, above a communal entrance, on a warehouse roof or over outdoor seating can be instructed on a published figure without a survey first - which is usually what holds these jobs up for a week.

The Hour After the Treatment

Knowing what to expect here prevents most of the calls we get from people who think a treatment has failed when it has not.

• Activity continues, and often increases briefly. Foraging wasps that were away from the nest return afterwards and carry the treatment in with them. That is the mechanism working.
• Keep people and pets away from the flight line for the rest of the day. Not just the nest - the route they take to and from it.
• Close the windows on that side of the property for a few hours.
• Do not block the entrance, however tempting it looks once activity drops. A sealed nest sends the colony looking for another way out, and in a cavity wall that frequently means into the room on the other side.
• Do not knock the nest down in the days afterwards. Leave it.

A nest that is completely silent within the hour would be the surprise rather than the norm. If there is still real activity after a couple of days, that is when to call us - and it is what the guarantee is for.
