Signs You May Need Cockroach Control in Greenwich

• An insect running for cover when a light goes on. Almost always the first sighting, and almost always in a kitchen.
• Droppings that look like ground pepper. In cupboard corners, along the tops of units and behind appliances.
• Egg cases. Small, dark, ridged capsules glued into a crevice or dropped near harbourage.
• A distinctive smell in an enclosed space. Musty and oily, noticeable when a cupboard has been shut.
• Sightings in daylight. Cockroaches are nocturnal. Seeing one in the day generally means the harbourage is crowded.
• Activity around drains, gullies or a basement. Which points at a different species from activity behind a fridge.

Two Species, Two Different Jobs

The German cockroach is small, pale brown, and lives inside the warm parts of a building - the void behind a fridge motor, the underside of a worktop, the space inside a kitchen unit, the back of a dishwasher. It breeds quickly and stays close to warmth and food. The Oriental cockroach is larger, much darker, and prefers cooler damp places: drains, gullies, basements, boiler rooms, and the ground floor of a building rather than the warm heart of a kitchen.

That difference decides everything. A German cockroach problem is treated at the harbourages inside the kitchen. An Oriental cockroach problem usually has an origin outside the room you are standing in, and treating the kitchen alone will not resolve it.

How Cockroach Treatment Works

The survey identifies the species and the harbourage, which in a kitchen means looking behind and underneath appliances, inside unit carcasses, along the underside of worktops, around pipe entries and in the warm cavity around motors and cabling. Where the evidence points at drains, gullies or a basement instead, the survey follows it there.

Treatment is placed at those harbourages and at the routes between them. A follow-up is standard, because egg cases are protected and the point of the second visit is to deal with what hatches after the first. Cockroach work without a follow-up is optimistic rather than complete.

What helps, and what does not

• Helps: clearing the space behind and under appliances so the harbourage can be reached; telling us honestly how long it has been going on.
• Helps: leaving treated areas alone afterwards rather than scrubbing them, which removes the treatment along with the mess.
• Does not help: retail surface sprays, for the dispersal reason above.
• Does not help: a deep clean immediately before the visit, which moves the population without reducing it and makes the harbourage harder to find.

Cockroaches in Flats and Commercial Kitchens

German cockroaches move between flats through service risers, boxed pipework and the gaps around waste pipes, which is why an infestation in a converted building or a block is frequently a building problem rather than a flat problem. If your neighbours have seen them too, that is important information and worth saying at the enquiry stage. In commercial kitchens the same logic applies to the space between units, behind stainless steel and inside warm equipment housings.
