Look Up Before You Look at the Carpet

The larvae feed on keratin, and an old bird's nest full of feathers and debris is one of the richest sources of it a building can hold. Blackheath's period stock offers plenty of places for one: eaves, accessible and inaccessible roof voids, and chimneys that stopped being used generations ago.

That is the honest explanation for the most frustrating version of this problem - small clean holes that keep appearing in wool carpet or clothing after the floor has been treated. The floor was never the source.

If the holes come back after the carpet was treated, the question is not what was used on the carpet. It is what is in the roof.

• Small, clean, sharply defined holes. In wool carpet, a wool jumper or a natural-fibre rug. This is the clearest difference from carpet moth, which grazes an area rather than punching through it.
• Hairy, banded larvae. Short, bristly and often described as woolly bears. They curl up when disturbed and shed their skins as they grow.
• Shed larval skins. Frequently more visible than the larvae themselves - pale, hollow and found at carpet edges, in drawers or along skirtings.
